Valve has revealed “Steam Machines” today, which will come in different forms from different manufacturers in 2014, but all will run SteamOS. Valve is planning to send out 300 prototype boxes to Steam users, free of charge, who complete the Steam Machine Eligibility Quest.
“Entertainment is not a one-size-fits-all world,” Valve wrote, in part. “We want you to be able to choose the hardware that makes sense for you, so we are working with multiple partners to bring a variety of Steam gaming machines to market during 2014, all of them running SteamOS.”
Valve announced SteamOS on Monday, a linux-based, free operating system designed to play Linux games and also stream Windows and Mac Steam games and also other entertainment to a big screen. Valve says the SteamOS will stream over a user’s home network onto a TV using “any living room machine”.
